I just read an article about seniors and a dramatic rise in accidents caused by them in the past couple years, I was (and have for a while) thinking that there should be an age limit on a drivers license. What about a periodic driving exam? You know grandma has cut you off before!
Answer:
There should be more stringent testing for drivers license renewal including reaction time, ability to turn ones neck far enough to see if there is a car in the next lane before changing lanes, and ability to distinguish between the gas pedal and brake.
i think you should have to take a test every 2 months. not a big deal, its not like seniors have jobs to go to.
People age and mature at different rates. The same way they enter puberty at different times. One 14 year old... might be, at least physically, very much different than another one. Same goes for the elderly. Just because one 80 year old shouldn't drive...which may seriously be the case, doesn't mean that another 80 year old shouldn't. I don't think age has anything to do with the ability to drive... its the senses, attention and ability to react.
And I've been cut off by teen age drivers too... so, whats good for the seniors... is good for the teens.
You are so right. I wish after 65 we'd need to test each and every stinkin' year, bother though it be. We could be reasonably sure the majority of knuckleheads wouldn't be getting behind the wheel.
Honey I am a grandma ... and neither my husband nor I drive ... in fact, my husband has NEVER had a driver's license, and I let mine 'drop' when I noticed that my 'reaction time' wasn't as good any more. I may be a very good driver, still, but especially in the 'big city' (Seattle) where I live, with the bus system so good and widespread (to three counties now, and possibly farther than that, especially to the 'coast' and all the way down to Astoria Oregon) why do we NEED a car. We usually need a car only ONE time every two weeks ... to help us get our 'big grocery shopping' home. The cost of that is only $15 (including a $5 tip ... I used to drive a cab and know they HATE 'grocery calls' but not when they get one with my first name, since they all know I tip very well and appreciate them) ... plus $1.25 for me to ride the bus downtown and get back home on the 'transfer' ... but you asked about an 'age limit' to driver's licenses. YES, I do believe there should be an 'age limit' ... which should be 'take a test and pass it every two years' for everyone over 60. But then to be 'totally honest' I wish they could just 'make driving a private gas-burning car (even a hybrid car) ILLEGAL, and only let people own 'small three wheeled electric vehicles' for transporting 'larger items' home ... and leave the 'main roads' to the big trucks that do 'delivery' or provide a 'necessary service.' I know that is not likely to happen in my lifetime, but if you are under 30, I hope it may happen in yours ... that would be far more desirable than having this earth go through a new ice age because of the 'global warming' that is now HAPPENING. As it is, I'm hot enough to actually WISH for that ice age to come (today it was 97 degrees where we live, and we don't have an air conditioner, and only use one small fan to help keep our two computers cool) ... but I really 'don't want that to happen to any of us. So ... become an 'activist' and 'work to change the laws ... whether that be for 'driving age limits' or stopping global warming, or whatever you think 'matters most.' Thank you for 'reading' my rather 'weird answer ... but to me the 'cars' and 'global warming' are closely connected and I had to 'speak up' ...
I'm sure you know very well that the Seniors would never let an age limit for drivers licenses be passed. They are a politically influential group and therefore can keep the government from doing anything that violates their rights.
I think we should repeal the entire driver licensing system. If somebody gets into an accident, they should have to pay for whatever damages they cause. If somebody drives safely, why should they be prohibited from driving just because they don't have a piece of paper?
Its absurd to set arbitrary ages anyways, as there are people who are capable of driving, but happen to be 14, and there are people who are incapable of driving but happen to be 45.
The only reason drivers licenses exist is to keep track of where everybody lives so that the police can arrest anybody they want at any time. That is not a legitimate purpose, except in a police state, and therefore the drivers license should be repealed.
No, Some older people are good drivers. However, I do think that yearly testing should be mandatory after a certain age. Such testing should include a driving test, a written test, a cognition test and a medical exam.
Of course, it has been said that no one should drive until past age 21. Even though teens have good cognition, eyesight and reflexes, some are lacking in emotional maturity. I'm talking about those that aren't emotionally strong enough to resist the challenge to race the person in the other lane. I
Let's not forget the middle age. Some middle age people are prone to road rage as well as conduct business, eat or apply make-up while driving
Therefore, it seem that each age category comes a set bad bad drivers. lol
YES!! I saw this old lady that could barley walk driving next to my house every morning ! and my dad always want to tell that she should not be driving and shes about 86!
I think they should be tested every 2 years, unless a doctor requests it more often.
